Abstract

608,150. Roofs; floors; beams. HEYDEN, B. A. V. Feb. 15, 1946, No. 4793. [Class 20(iv)] A building slab is made by assembling a number of light porous blocks 20, Fig. 1, which may be made of cinder concrete and are provided with channels 25 in one face and with through passages 22, 24. The blocks are positioned with the channels in alignment and, to ensure good contact between the abutting faces, such faces may be ground before assembly. The blocks are then clamped by plates 43, Fig. 10, and tie rods 45 and reinforcing rods 50 are inserted longitudinally in the channels. Ribs are provided transversely in the channels and the rods have rings 51 whereby they are spaced somewhat from the sides and bottom of the channels. Cement 52 is -now deposited in the channels from the travelling hopper 53 and may be cured by steam admitted through a pipe 62. After the cement is set the plates 43 and rods 45 are removed whereby the rods 50 become tensioned and the blocks remain under compression. The slabs are now inserted and may be placed side by side to form a roof or a floor. As shown in Fig. 13 the floor may be given an arched form by the jack arrangement 65 shown or such an arrangement may be used to correct any sag. Small inserts 70, Fig. 15, may be inserted between the adjacent blocks in the gaps caused by the curvature.
