Abstract

685,131. Beams; floors; reinforced concrete. EVANS, W. A. March 27, 1951 [Dec. 23, 1949], No. 32897/49. Class 20(iv) A composite beam for a concrete roof, floor or the like is formed from reinforced concrete beam elements placed end-to-end and held together under compression by prestressing members carried in open guide ways in the outer side surfaces of the beam elements. The figures show a footbridge 1 spanning the space between walls 2 and 3 and built of composite beams laid side by side..Each beam consists of a pair of reinforced beam elements 4 or 6 which are placed in line with their aljoining ends on a temporary support 11. The inner beams 4 are hollow except at the ends and have grooves 9 formed in each side face. The side beams 6 are solid throughout and have a groove 9 in the inner side face only. A steel cable 10 is passed through each duct formed by the grooves 9 and a concrete filling member 5 cast in situ between the beam ends. When the member 5 has hardened the cables are strained against the end faces of the beam whilst transverse prestressing rods 13 are threaded through holes provided near the beam ends and tensioned to hold the beams together. Grouting is filled into the ducts and anchor blocks 14 and 15 are cast in situ against the ends of beams to secure the cable ends. The structure is completed by a concrete layer 7 which is spread over the beams 4.
