803,484. Reinforced concrete; floors; roofs; girders. PRE-STRESSED CONCRETE CO., Ltd. Nov. 28, 1956 [Sept. 12, 1955], No. 26057/55. Class 20(4) A slab for a large span floor or roof comprises a number of pre-cast pre-stressed concrete planks 1 arranged side-by-side with bars 3 projecting from the upper surface and light hollow boxes 5 of e.g. cardboard, placed along at least one plank and a continuous concrete layer 9 cast In-situ over the surface and covering the bars 3 which reinforces the joint between the concrete covering 9 and the planks 1. The planks 1 are pernanently supported on walls 2 and may have temporary intermediate supports if necessary. The bars 3 are U-shaped stirrups having hooked ends 4 and are cast in the planks 1 at equal intervals along their length. As shown, the boxes 5 are arranged in rows between the hooked ends 4, and transversely aligned spaces 7 are left between adjacent boxes in each row in which is placed a reinforcing bar 8. The in-situ concrete 9 penetrates between the rows of boxes 5 forming longitudinal concrete webs 10 and also into the spaces 7 forming transverse stiffening ribs and is tied to the planks by the stirrups 3. When an intermediate support is required but. is not available, a reinforced concrete beam may be constructed within the depth of the slab. Fig. 6 shows angle irons affixed to the ends of the planks 1 which are temporarily supported by props, and reinforcing bars 15, 16 placed in position. U-shaped bars 17 placed over the reinforcing bars have threaded ends 18 which project through holes in the angle irons 14 and are secured in position by nuts 19. The covering concrete 19 is cast around the bars 15, 16 to form the reinforced concrete beam which, when set, supports the bars 17 and the temporary props can then be removed. In Fig. 7 (not shown), an arched roof slab is formed by tensioning tie rods to the ends of the concrete planks, the slab then built up in the same manner as before. The boxes 5 alternatively may be formed of hollow tiles or solid blocks of lightweight material, e.g. aerated concrete, foamed slag or vermiculite. Specification 748,104 is referred to.
