Abstract

751,847. Building units; walls; wall slabs. LOWE, J. N., and CAZALY, L. G. Feb. 10, 1954 [Nov. 10, 1952; Nov. 10, 1952], Nos. 28293/52 and 28294/52. Classes 20(4) and 87(1). A pre-cast pre-stressed concrete load-bearing wall slab or wall beam comprises a mass of concrete in which blocks of a lighter and weaker material are embedded, the blocks being spaced apart so that the concrete forms a continuous grid between them, the said blocks lying in a plane which is vertical when the member is in its load-bearing position. In Figs. 1, 2, rectangular blocks 1 are arranged in rows at 45 degrees to the horizontal. The blocks 1 are cut away or shaped as required to accommodate the prestressing cables 2, 3. The member is cast on its side, the blocks being placed on a layer of concrete if it is desired to enclose the sides of the blocks. The pre-stressing wires, or ducts for the same, and ordinary reinforcement, are placed in position before the rest of the concrete is poured. Window or like openings are formed in the member by replacing a number of the blocks by a window frame. Horizontal ducts may be embedded in the concrete, for alignment with ducts in adjacent members, so that prestressing cables running the whole length of the wall may bind the members together under pre-stress. The blocks may be hollow tiles, timber boxes, breeze, foamed slag, vermiculite or the material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Leca." A piggery incorporating the members is described.
