Abstract

731,972. Reinforced concrete floors or roofs. LESTER, D. R. Sept. 22, 1953 [Dec. 29, 1952], No. 32890/52. Class 20 (4). In a floor or roof formed from reinforced concrete beams laid side by side the beams being formed of pre-cast members 10, 11, 12, Fig. 1, laid end to end abutting or closely adjacent one another, longitudinal reinforcing bars 27, Fig. 3, embedded in the members extend therefrom so as to overlap in pockets or recesses 26 which are formed in at least one of each pair of end to end members by making the end portion 25 of reduced width. As shown each beam consists of three units 10, 11, 12, adjoining units each having a pocket 26 which is filled with cement grout at the same time as the grouting is done between the beams, the units being arranged on temporary supports 15, having platforms 16, until the cement grout has set. Each unit is of inverted channel section with horizontal flanges along its lower edges, the rods 27 which are of square section being embedded in the side walls thereof and extending beyond the ends of the unit a distance slightly less than the length of the reduced width portion 25 of the unit. In a modification Fig. 8, the reduced width portion 25 of one of the units 40 is made so long that the adjacent unit 41 has no reduced width portion. A ceiling 30 may be secured to the underside of the assembled floor or roof by being nailed to wooden blocks 31 cast in the concrete of the units, the space 33 at each end of the beams, formed by end portions 32 of reduced height, being used to house service pipes such as gas, water and electric conduits. In modifications the wood blocks 31 may be omitted nailable concrete being cast on the bases of the beams, or a series of holes may be formed through the sides of the beams or a series of metal eyes secured thereto so that ceiling supports may be wired to the beams. Sheets of expanded metal may be secured to the underside of the beams to receive a coating of plaster.
