690,984. Concrete floors and roofs; metal joists. FLOORS, Ltd., S. A. April 14, 1950 [Feb. 18, 1949], No. 4553/49. Classes 20(ii) and 20(iv) In floating concrete floors, roofs, or other suspended surfaces, Fig. 8, the concrete F is run between wedge shaped precast concrete beams A freely supported at each end, permanent shuttering being provided by sheets D of plain or corrugated fibreboard, plastic, or metal, &c. which are secured to the undersides of beams A to provide a permanent under ceiling surface. In a lighter and stronger construction, Fig. 4, an initial layer of concrete is formed between sheets E and the sheets D, a second layer of lightweight concrete being built up over the beams A and over wooden, or metal lathing H which is sprung into the troughs of the sheets E and provides spaces G. The spaces G may alternatively be formed by introducing lightweight hollow blocks which also provide accommodation for heating pipes, &c. Reinforcing rods may be placed in the flooring parallel with the beams A. Metal joists A, Fig. 7, having reinforcing rods L, may replace the concrete beams or, the reinforcing rods may themselves constitute the joist in which case they are built into a metal structure by means of connecting struts which are welded to the rods at spaced intervals along their length.
