[Class 35] [Also in Group XXXVII] An electromagnetic torque producer has a two-pole armature mounted for limited.rotation between two pairs of poles in such a way that the sum of the overlapping areas of pole and armature and also the air-gap are constant, whilst the width of each pole decreases away from the pole face to reduce the forces due to leakage flux, each pole pair being similarly magnetized and the torque being produced by diverting the flux to one or other of each pair of poles. As shown, the armature 15 which may operate a fluid valve or a contact arm 20, as in Fig. 1, rotates on a pivot 14 between the pole pairs 12 of the pole members 11. A permanent magnet 18 energizes the polepieces 11 and coils 25 direct to the flux produced through either of the arms 12 to pull the armature into a corresponding position. Damping may be provided by means of short-circuited coils 26 or resistance circuits 27, 28 wound on the free polepieces. At least some of the armature laminations may be shaped as in Fig. 2 to offset the effects of leakage flux.
