Abstract

596,630. Electromagnetic relays. SIEMENS BROS. & CO., Ltd., BRYAN, E. A., and JACKSON, W. B. July 31, 1945, No. 19615. [Class 38(v)] In an electromagnetic relay, an armature 29, 30 carrying contacts 15, has each end thereof situated in the gap between a pair of pole-pieces 11 12, the armature being pivotally mountec at 16 in a U-shaped non - magnetic frame 17 clamped between the pole-pieces there by determining the distance therebetween. Clamped between pole-shoes 9, 10 are permanent magnets (not shown) for polarising the pole-pieces. The armature is influenced either by a single coil 20 subject to current in either direction or by two coils separately energised to produce opposite magnetic effects on the armature, which is mounted on a pin bridging and engaging the insides of the limbs of the frame 17. On energisation of coil 20, the armature takes up one of its diagonal positions and one pair of contacts 15, 21 is closed. Reverse energisation, or energisation, of the other winding causes the other pair to be closed. The armature may be arranged so that it has a normal central position, as shown, or so that it remains in one of its diagonal positions until attracted to the other. One of the permanent magnets between the pole shoes may be replaced by a non-magnetic spacer and both may be replaced by an electromagnet having one or two windings.
