Abstract
769,770. Electromagnetic relays. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 23, 1955, No. 14863/55, Class 38(5) A relay, Figs. 3, 5, comprises a pair of sealed insulating enclosures 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, each enclosure being constructed according to Figs. 1, 2, in which a reed armature 5 carried by a conducting magnetic rod 3 operates between the ends of a pair of conductin g magnetic rods 1, 2 to function as a change-over contact. The enclosure is exhausted by a tube 6 and may be filled with nitrogen. Coils 7, 8, 9 respectively surround the rods 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, 2, 2<SP>1</SP> and 3, 3<SP>1</SP> of the two contact sets, the magnetic circuits being completed by yokes 10, 11 having bent-over flanges 12, 14 entering the coils and insulated from the rods by low reluctance spacers 13, 15. The coil 9 serves to polarize the armatures and the coils 7, 8 are energized to produce fluxes which assist each other whereby the armatures are held against the rods 1, 1<SP>1</SP> or 2, 2<SP>1</SP> depending on the polarity of the coils 7, 8, the armatures being changedover by reversing the current in the coils 7, 8. In another construction, Figs. 4, 7, the rods 1, 1<SP>1</SP> are embraced by a pair of coils 16, 17 and the rods 2, 2<SP>1</SP> by a coil 18, and a pair of yokes 19, 20 magnetically link the rods 3, 3<SP>1</SP> with the rods 1, 1<SP>1</SP> and 2, 21. In one condition of the relay only the polarizing winding 16 is energized and the armatures are held against the rods 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, the armatures being changed over by energizing the coils 17, 18 to produce fluxes denoted by arrows in Fig. 7. In the construction, Fig. 8, the magnetic circuits between the rods 3 and rods 1, 2 of a number of units 4 are completed by yokes 25, 26. When only the polarizing coil 27 is energized the armatures 5 engage the rods 1, energization of the coil 28 in the same sense as the coil 27 causing the flux from the coil 27 to be diverted from the rods 3 to the yoke 26, and the armatures changeover. According to Fig. 11 a single housing 33 accommodates two change-over contact sets 1,.2, 5 spaced in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the Fig. and situated at either side of a common E-shaped yoke 35, the pairs of rods 1, 2 and 3 being respectively surrounded by coils 36, 37, 38 which also embrace appropriate limbs of the yoke, the relay functioning as described with reference to Fig. 3. The polarizing windings may be replaced by permanent magnets. Specification 631,713 is referred to.
