Abstract
843,728. Electromagnetic relays. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 19, 1958 [Aug. 22, 1957], No. 26638/58. Class 38 (5). A bi-stable polarized relay has an armature assembly 7 with two fixed soft-iron strips 9, 10 clamped between two similarly polarized non- conducting permanent magnets 5, 6 which separate them from the ends 3, 4 of two yoke members 1, 2. Paper tape 20 which has been impregnated with a synthetic resin, is wound tightly around these parts and the resin is then hardened. The armature assembly is completed by a phosphor bronze strip 8 soldered to the strips 9, 10 and carrying the movable armature formed by soft iron strips 13, 14. The yoke members 1, 2 retain the operating coil 17 in position and their ends 11, 12 are held by a block 19 of insulating material for alternative engagement of contact surfaces 21, 22 thereon by the armature. The ends 15, 16 of the strips 9, 10 are arranged adjacent to the strips 13, 14 so as to form a low resistance flux path along the armature assembly 7. The contact surfaces of the armature and yoke may be covered with a layer of rhodium or silver. The assembly 7 and the separate yoke members 1, 2 are each connected to a respective terminal 27 and the relay is sealed in a glass tube 29 which may be evacuated or filled with an inert gas.
