Abstract
752,369. Electromagnetic relays. FLIGUE, W. DE, and LAVALLEE, P. L. March 12, 1954 [March 23, 1953], No. 7348/54. Class 38(5) A relay comprises a U-shaped magnetic member 1 having a core 3 energized by a coil 8 the. core being shunted through pole pieces 4, 5 by a permanent magnet 6. A balanced armature 2 is pivoted at 12 to the member 1 whereby one circuit for the magnet flux is formed by the pole pieces 4, 5, the armature, and member 1, and another circuit by the pole pieces and the core 3. The other end of the armature co-operates with a permanent magnet 9 mounted on the member 1 but magnetically separate from the latter. The relative effect of the magnets 6, 9 on the armature is adjustable by varying the reluctance of a non-magnetic spacer 7 associated with magnet 6. In one embodiment, the magnet 6 is preponderant so that the armature is attracted thereto when the coil 8 is de-energized, and the relay is operated by energizing the coil with current having such a polarity that the flux produced assists that of the magnet 6 whereby the apparent reluctance of the circuit 3 ... 6 is decreased and a smaller proportion of the permanent magnet flux traverses the armature and member 1, whereby the magnet 9 is able to operate the armature. In another embodiment, the magnet 9 preponderates and the armature is normally attracted thereto and is operated by energizing the coil 8 with current of a polarity to produce a flux opposing that of the magnet 6. In a further embodiment, the armature remains in whichever position it is moved by the coil, and is moved to its other position by energizing the coil with a current of opposite polarity. The core 3 has a conical portion 3b seating in a similar-shaped hole 1a in the member 1 and is fixed to the latter by a nut 3c. The armature carries contacts 2a, 2b.
