Abstract

765,663. Electromagnetic relays. SIEMENS & GENERAL ELECTRIC RAILWAY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and CANDLER, J. E. Dec. 1, 1953 [Dec. 5, 1952], No. 36561/55. Divided out of 765,661. Class 38(5) A relay comprises a core 41 energized alternately by coils 42, 43 and an armature 44 pivoted at 51, the armature comprising a permanent magnet 49 having vertical magnetic axis held between two magnetic members 47, 48. Energization of one of coils induces such a polarity in the core poles 45, 46 that armature ends 52, 53 are repelled and ends 54, 55 attracted, and the armature changes over to its other position in which it is again held by the permanent magnet when the coil is de-energized. Energization of the other one of the coils produces an opposite polarity in the poles 45, 46 so that the. armature is returned to the initial position. Movement of the armature operates a set of contacts, not shown. A further contact set (not shown) is operated by a further armature 56 pivoted at 57 to move between the core 41 and a pole piece 59 connected to the core through a permanent magnet 61 having a vertical magnetic axis. When the coils 42, 43 are not energized the armature 56 is magnetically held in the position shown. Energization of the one of the coils produces a field through the core 41 in the same direction as the magnet 61 and the armature 56 is not moved. Energization of the other coils however, produces an opposite field so that the armature is attracted to the core and is then released to be held by the pole piece 59 when that coil is de-energized. In a modification (see the drawing accompanying the Complete Specification, not shown) a single operating coil is provided energized alternately in opposite' directions, and the permanent magnet 61 is omitted.
