[Class 83 (iii)] In an adjustable reamer having blades held between a pair of nuts at opposite ends of the shank, the ends of the blades are capable of being expanded or contracted simultaneously for reaming straight holes, or independently for reaming tapered holes. Three segments g, Figs. 2 and 3, are formed with helical cutting edges and have ends coned internally and externally. To increase the diameter of the segments equally at both ends, a coned locknut h, Fig. 5, is unscrewed on the left-hand thread b, Fig. 1, on the shank d by the required distance, as indicated by a micrometer scale l, and a sleeve p, Fig. 4, is screwed up the same distance on a right-hand thread c so that the internal cones on the segments ride up the taper f on the shank and the taper o on the sleeve; either the lock-nut h or another coned lock-nut i<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 7, screwed on the sleeve is then tightened to secure the segments in the adjusted position. By suitable adjustment of the locknuts and the sleeve, either end of the segments may be adjusted independently. Grooves r on the segments engage lugs.q on the shank to prevent relative rotational movement of the segments and the nut h has a counterbore n to give a long bearing on the plain portion of the shank.
