Abstract

1,271,343. Taps; reamers. BESENBRUCH HOFMANN Inc. 11 Aug., 1970 [11 Aug., 1969], No. 38725/70. Headings B3C and B3N. For restoring an imperfect threaded hole, e.g. in an engine block, a tap 50 is screwed into the hole H to ream it out and then tap it. After this a sleeve 10 is screwed on to a spark plug 16 and the assembly screwed into the enlarged hole. The tap comprises three sections, viz. 53, 54 and 55. Section 53 has hollow ground edges 66 and in use starts to ream out the hole. Section 54 has hollow ground cutting edges 69<SP>1</SP> and acts to finish reaming of the hole and to form a helical groove therein. This groove is a guide for section 55 which has hollow ground cutting edges 73. In use the section forms a discontinuous thread in the hole. The sleeve is preferably formed of a lead-steel alloy so that when tightened in the hole the metal of its external thread will flow and seal in a gas-tight joint with the thread of the hole.
