Abstract

1,004,429. Screw-sockets; nuts. GENERAL AMERICAN TRANSPORTATION CORPORATION. Jan. 14, 1964, No. 1556/64. Addition to 934,020. Heading F2H. [Also in Division B3] A method of producing a threaded anchorage in a workpiece is substantially the same as that disclosed in the parent Specification in which a relatively hard metal ferrule is swaged into a relatively soft metal but the claim is directed to the use of a ferrule having a prehardened outer casing and a soft core which minimises the longitudinal creep of the ferrule during swaging. An externally longitudinally serrated low carbon steel, e.g. S.A.E. 1010, ferrule 10, slotted at 12, having a soft core and a casehardened outside, produced for example by using a nitriding agent such as potassium ferrocyanide, is cadmium plated. The ferrule which is shorter in length than the depth of the workpiece bore, is frictionally supported on a shouldered mandrel, e.g. of steel, and forced and positioned thereby into a bore 31 of a soft workpiece 30, e.g. of aluminium, so that the serrations are embedded in the wall thereof. The ferrule is finally swaged by a thread swaging tap which forms a thread therein, the cadmium plating serving as a lubricant and swages the ferrule and workpiece together and produces limited longitudinal flow therein such that the ferrule substantially fills the bore of the workpiece which may be " blind " or " close-ended ".
