ADJUSTABLE REAMER.
- Application filed April 10, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUY A. COUNTRYMAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Reamers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in adjustable reamers, and the object of the invention is to provide a reamer having reaming blades adapted to be quickly adjusted and securely locked by a screw collar.
and in which the blades are interchangeable and of simple form and inclined and also tangentially related to the axis to effect perfect reaming operations in openings of different diameter.
In the drawing accompanying this application Figure 1 is a side view of a reaming tool embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the center line of the tool. Fig. 3 is a side view of the body and shank of the tool with the adjusting and locking disks in section and the locking collar and reaming blades omitted. Fig. l is a side view of the locking collar, partly in section. Fig. 5 is a cross section of the tool on line 5-5, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a cross section and end view of the tool on line 66, Fig. 2.
The tool comprises a conical body 2 having a reduced screw-threaded extension 3 at its larger end which is provided with a round and slightly tapered socket or bore 4 adapted to receive the slightly tapered end 5 of a round shank 6 having a flat tongue 7 at its opposite end. The shank may be wedged into the socket very tightly to rotate the body but it is also easily removed and a shank of another size substituted, and a central opening 8 extends through the smaller end of body 2 to permit a driving tool to be used to release the shank if necessar C Onical body 2 is provided on its exterior with a series of longitudinal slots 9 at uniformly-spaced intervals and the base of each slot extends parallel with the outer conical surface of the body and consequently is inclined relatively to the axis. Further, these slots extend into the body on straight lines tangent to the curved surface of the body so that when a set of flat reaming blades 10 are placed therein their cutting edges 11 will pro ect beyond the curved surface on substantially radial lines to obtain effective cut Specification of Letters Patent.

ting or reaming results. The reaming blades are relatively thin and long and also wide enough to protrude a slight distance beyond the outer curved surface of body 2 except midlength of the body where an annular screw-threaded enlargement 13 is provided which is adapted to be engaged by internal screw-threads in the annular offset 12 at the middle of a conical locking collar 14, which is substantially of the same length as body 2. The longitudinal movement of the collar is parallel with the axis of the body and in screwing the collar in place the exposed edges of the reaming blades are engaged at opposite ends of the body and the collar is engaged and supported centrally between its end on a small number of screw-threads. This arrangement affords a slight lateral play and rocking motion for the collar rela tively to the body so that all the reaming blades will be positively engaged and locked in place when the collar is rotated into binding engagement with the blades, and a spanv ner wrench may be used to turn the collar at a point midway of the collar and to facilitate such engagement the annular offset 12 is of uniform diameter to provide a straight seating surface for the wrench and has one or more spanner wrench openings 15.
The reamer blades are also of sufiicient length to project beyond both ends of body 2 and collar 14, and the converging extremities of the blades may be brought nearer together by moving the blades longitudinally in slots 9, a proceeding easily accomplished by a follower or backing disk 16 when the collar is loosely engaged with the body. Disk 16 has screw-threaded engagement with the threaded extremity 3 and whenever a desired adjustment of the reaming blades has been effected a second disk 17 on extremity 8 may be turned into facial engagement with the adjusting disk and the parts locked together. The reaming extremities of the blades shown in the accompanying drawing are formed to ream an opening of flaring shape, but these extremities may be formed in various ways according to the kind of work in hand, and inasmuch as the working ends of these blades may be spread apart or brought together at body having inclined slots lengthwise in its outer surface and an annular screw-thread ed enlargement intermediate its ends traversed by said slots, reaming blades seated in said slots and a conical collar about said body having an annular screw-threaded offset between its ends engaged upon said screw threaded enlargement and bearing upon said blades above and below said ofiset.
A reaming tool, comprising a conical body having inclined slots lengthwise there of and inclined to the aXis thereof and provided with an annular screw-threaded enlargement at its middle parallel to the axis of said body, a set of reaming blades movable lengthwise in said slots and projecting above and belowthe ends of said body, a conical collar having substantially the same length as said body and provided with a screw-threaded annular offset between its ends adapted to screw-engage said body enlargement and confine said blades, and follow up and backing means adapted to engage and move said blades longitudinally of the body.
3. A reaming tool, comprisin a conical body having slots longitudinally inclined inward from the larger to the smaller end of said body and to the axis of the tool and provided with a screw-threaded enlargement between its ends parallel to the axis of the said body, a set of removable reamer blades within said slots, a follower and backing member for said blades in screw engagement with said extension, a locking device for said follower and backing member, and a conical locking collar for said blades inclosing said body about its side and having internal screwihreads midway of its length engaging the screw-threaded enlargement on said conical body.
Signed at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, this 5th day of April, 1919.
