The primary objects of the'present invention are, to provide in a pullerwith radially relatively movable jaw-members, means for binding said jaw-members against relative spreading movement; to so combine said jawmembers and said binding means as to prevent the unintentional separation of the bindingmeans from the tool; to providea puller with aplura'lity of aw-members in combination with means for maintaining said jawmcmbers in definite spaced relation to eachv other in a peripheral direction; to provide a special construction of jaw-members in combination with an encircling binding means whereby the gripping portions of said awmembers may be adjusted to, and held'in, any one ofa plurality of relative adjusted operative positions to grip different sizes of gears, wheel-hubs or the like; to provide a simple separable channeled head and cooperating ball construction'of said jaw-members for pivotally mounting said'jaw-members in said head; to provide means for pre venting the. gripping portions of said jawmembers from twisting with relation to each other; to provide simple quickly operated means for simultaneously moving all of said jaw-members to, and holding themin, spread position; to provide a special construction of jaw-members capable of production by being stamped from sheet metal; to so combine the V jaw-members, thrust-screw and body of the tool that each of said jaw-members will receive all strains 1n an edgewise direction; to so 7 combine the aw-members and the bindlng ring that the latter will receive all strains in an edgewise direction and radially; and to otherwise simplify, improveand increase the efiiciency of such tools. c

The foregoing construction is, "of course, old but is simply illustrated and thus generally described to facilitatea clearunderstanding of theinv'ention and its operation as applied to pulling wheels. i
In the embodiment illustrated the puller' i comprises four main operative'divisions or block 1, means for drawing and holding said block 1 and collar 2 toward each other, which means may be bolts 3 with their cooperating nuts, and a spacing and bracing block, which maybe a separate radially slotted plate 4 secured in any convenient manner, for instance by bolts 3 and their cooperating nuts; second, a powerful externally screw-threaded thrust-screw 5 engaging and working in the internally screw-threaded bore of said sleeve or block 1 and which may have a small centering tip or point received in a conical bore or countersink in the outer end of an internally screw-threaded protective cap or block F which may be applied to the outer end of the screw-threaded end portion E of the axle A, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 4, to prevent spreading of, or damage to the threads of, said axle A where the application of great force or hammer blows is necessary, as is quite frequently thecase in connection with such tapering fit constructions; third. a gripping portion or unit consisting of a plurality ofjaw-members 6'pivotally mounted in the body member atequi-distant points peripherally about, and radially from, the axis thereof to have swinging movement about their respective pivotal points in their respective radial planes, so that their free swinging ends will have radial movement. with relation to each other in spreading apart for application to a'wheel-hub B to be pulled, and in moving toward each other or closing to lie back of, and engage, an annular flange, such as D. of said wheel-hub B or the like; and, fourth, an operator or encircling member or rlng 7 forspreading and closing said gripping portion or jaw-members 6, said operator or ring preferably being formed to cooperate with all of said jaw-members 6 to brace each of said jaw-members 6 against twisting and all movement except pivotal swinging movement in a radial plane.
The jaw members 6 preferably are exact duplicates of each other in both size and form, or as nearly exact duplicates as itis practical to make them under usual large quantity production conditions, and will preferably be struck out by the same die, or by duplicate dies, by stamping them out of sheet metal. However, there is no need for great exactitude of detail, such as is present in the production ofmeasuring instruments and other precision. Instruments and there will be no attemptat exact uniformity down to minute details of form, size or thickness, the general construction of the tool does not demand absolute precision in the formation of the parts, nor does the use of the type require absolute precision, but on the contrary its contemplated field of use demands a tool which can be produced in large quantity to be sold on a reasonable margin of profit basis, and the terminology herein employed is to be read in this light.
Each said jaw-member 6 has its radially inner portion of its free or swinging end portion cut or stamped to form an abrupt shoulder or jaw face 8 extending preferably substantially perpendicularl to the axis of the thrust-screw 5 in assembled operative gripping relation and has the radially inner portion of its pivoted end portion formed with a curved or interrupted ball portion 9 received between, and with its convex edge faces in sliding contact with, theopposed concave arcuate faces of the body 1 and collar 2 to therewith constitute a ball and socket pivotal connection between the respective j aw-members Sand the body comprising said block 1 and collar 2, and the radially inner portion of the extreme end portion nearest collar 20f each of saidjaw-members 6 is preferably formed with a radially outwardly inclined edge face 10 to strike against the opposed face of the cylindrical portion of block or sleeve 1 adjacent to collar 2 to limit the radially outward swinging movement of said jaw-members 6 and the turna ing movement thereof of the, spreading and stop ears 16.
The radially outer edge of each of said jaW- members 6 will preferably be formed with a short straight portion 11 adjacent ring stop lug 12, an inclined shoulder 13 extending radially inward from edge face portion 11 toward thrust bolt 5 to a straight edge face portion'l i, which merges with a slightly inclined edge face 15 extending radially inward toward the thrust bolt '5to the spreading and stop ear or lug 16.

The operating member will preferably b a ringmember 7 such as shown, preferably stamped from the same sheet metal stock as jaw-members 6, or heavier'stock, and having a circular central opening slightly 7 greater in diameter. than the external diameter of the plate 4 and sleeve or block 1 so as to have sliding movement enwiseiof said jawmembers 6 past plate d'in'either direction and for any distance between the stop lugs 12 respectively on the free swinging endportions of said jawemembers 6 and the spreading and stop ears or lugs 16 respectively ;on the pivoted end portions ofsaid jaw-members 6. r
Said member 7fis formed with a plurality of radial slots 7' disposed equi-distantly in a peripheral direction, corresponding in number to the jaw-members 6, registering in position with therespective slots 4" of the member 4- and being of the same width and making a freesliding fit on, and receiving the radially outer portions of the respective jawmembers 6, and extend from the inner periphery of said member or ring 7 radially outward to radially outer end walls or faces 17 which are all disposed equi-distantlyfrom the axis of said ring member'7 and in the assembled relation of the parts respectively engagethe radially outer edge faces of the respective jaw-members 6.
Assuming the parts to be assembled as above described, that it is desired to-apply the puller to a wheel-hub B to pull the same off of the axle A, and that the protective cap or block F has been applied to the end of axle A, the operation is as follows; the ring 7 is grasped at two points on dilferentfsides of its axis, preferably at diametrically opposite points, and shoved lengthwise of jawmembers 6 until its outer edges of faces 17, or the portions of its side face adjacent thereto and presented toward spreading or'stop ears or lugs 16 strike against the latter, engaging all, or substantially all of said spreading and stop ears or lugs 16 simultaneously, or substantially simultaneously, and turning them with their jaw-members 6 in the body in their respectively radial movement planes to spread their swinging operative or hook ends, until their respective edge'faceslO contact with the block orsleeve 1, so preventing further pivotal movement, inwhich relation of the parts, as will be noted, the spreading and stop ears or lugs 16 extend radially beyond the respective end walls or faces 17 of the ring 7, so effectually blocking further movement in that direction of the ring 7.

WVhere a smaller hub B is used sothat a y greater contraction of the members'61s neces v sary the ring 7 is forced toward the stop lugsl2 into contact with thevshort abruptly inclined faces 13, causing a quick inward contracting movement of the jaw-members 6, and then along the short straight edge face portions 11 into engagement with the stop lugs 12, which prevent further movement of ring? in that direction.
With the tool applied to the hub a stated, .2
the thrust-screw 5 is turned in through the sleeve 1, forcing the latter toward'the outer end of the screw 5 and, of course, exerting a pull on the jaw-members 6 and hub B in ly tighton, or frozen to, the axle A, the thrustscrew 5 will be turned into sleeve 1 as far as can be accomplished with a powerful long hand wrench,-and the head of screw=5 will then be hit with a hammer, which usualradially inner walls of the slots 4 are so located,or the adjacent face of the sleeve 1 is formed or extends radially to such eXtent as to contact at a predetermined point with the opposed radially inner edge face portions of the jaw-members 6 to prevent the radial inward swinging movement of the latter to such extent as to permit'thering 7 to be moved endwise of said jaw-members 6 to wardlandover the stop lugs 12. While this, or some other cooperating construction of said jaw-members 6 and said sleeve 1 or plate 4:, or equivalent part, functioning in this general manner, is preferred it is not essential, considering the invention in its broader aspects.
The medial portion of each of the jaw- Should the hub B be extreme- I t members 6 will preferably be slightly widened by cutting the radially inner edge with reversely inclined portions intersecting at a point about midway of the length of each jaw member 6 to give a greater weight of metal at this point, tapering ofi with a truss effect to brace said jaw members. i This is by no means essential, nor of particular importance, but it is an added advantage without added cost since it simply'makes use of metal that would otherwise be scrap and it costs no more to cut it in the preferred form than straight.
Considering the invention in its broader aspects, it is not essential that the operator or element 7 be of ring form,'nor is it essential that it be slotted radially to receive the jaw-members 6 in such slots, nor that it be of continuous band form, so long as it is of suchconstruction as to prevent spreading of the swinging ends of said jaw-members 6 when applied in operative binding relation thereto; nor is it essential, considering the invention broadly, that spreading and stop ears or lugs 16 be provided at the pivoted ends of the jaw-members 6, or that faces 10 or other means for limiting the movement of the jaw-members 6 inspreading be provided,.or that stop lugs 12 or any stop means limiting the endwise movement of the ring 7 in that direction he provided, either on the jaw-members 6 or otherwise.
In the construction illustrated in Figure 9 the construction and operation are in all respects the same as in the preferred form, except that the bracing and spreading radially slotted flange, block or plate 4 is sub stituted by a radially slotted flange 4a integral with blockor sleeve 1a and functioning in all respects in the same way as plate 4, and in substitution for the bolts 3 and their cooperating nuts, collar 2a is formed with an internally screw-threaded bore to engage the correspondingly externally screw-threaded outer cylindrical portion of sleeve or block 1a, a locking or friction screw 2?) being mounted in the collar 2a to be turned into binding engagement with said externally screw-threaded portion of sleeve or block 1a after said collar 2a shall have been turned up thereon to the adjustment desired.
In either form any wear of the ball portions 9 or socket can be compensated by oper ating the parts to bring the opposed grooved orarcuate faces of the sleeve or block and the collar closer together.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A pulling device comprising a centrally bored internally screw-threaded block, a
thrust-screw working in said block, guidemeans operatively rigid with said block and formed with a plurality of radially extending slots disposed in spaced relation in a peripheral direction, and a collar adjustable with relation to said block, said collar and block having opposed annularly extending faces diverging from each other'in a radially inward direction, in combination with a plurality ofrjaw-members respectively extending through the respective slots of said guide means and formed with portions extending in a radial plane with relation to said bore and having edge faces in sliding engagementwith the respective opposing faces of, and held between, said collar and block.
2. A pulling device comprising a centrally bored internally screw-threaded block, a thrust-screw working in said block, and a collar adjustable withrelation to said block, said collar and blockhaving opposed faces curved in a radial direction and diverging from-each other in a radially inward direction, in combination with a plurality of jawmembers having faces in sliding engagement with the respective opposing faces of, and held between, said collar and block;
3. A pulling device comprising a body, and a thrust-screw working through said body, in combination with a plurality of sheet metal jaw-members disposed edgewise radially of, and about, the axis of said body, each said jaw-member being formed with a radially extending curved ball portion received in said body for swinging connection thereto,
and having the radially inner portion of its free swinging end formed with an edge face presented toward said thrust-screw, whereby all pulling strains are exerted in the direction of greatest thickness of vmetal at all points of the respective jaw-members.
4. A pulling device comprising a body having a radially extending flange formed at equi-distant points of its periphery with radial slots, and a thrust-screw working through said body, in combination with a plurality of j aw-members respectively lying in the radial slots of said flangeand positioned and braced thereby against twisting, each said j aw-member being of sheet metal of substantially uniform thickness at all points, each said jaw-member being mounted in said body to swing in a radial plane in its respective slot in said flange, and each said jaw-member having the radially inner portion of its free swinging end formed with a radially extending edge face presented toward said body.
5. A pulling device comprising a body and a plurality of jaw-members pivotally mounted in said body and adapted to have swinging movement about their pivotal connections with said body member to cause relative spreading and contracting movement between the free swinging ends of said jawmembers, in combination with a member encircling said j aw-members and movable endwise thereof in contact with their respective outer peripheral edgefaces to cause them to swing toward each other, and means projecting into the path of travel of said encircling member and and engageable by the latter to limit its movement in one endwise direction and to cause the relative spreading movement of said jaw-members.
6. A pulling device comprising a body and a plurality of j aw-members pivotally mounted in said body and a'daptedto have swinging movement about their respective pivotal connections with said body to cause relative spreading and contracting movement between the free swinging ends of said jawmembers, in combination with a member encircling said .jaw-members and movable endwise thereof in contact with their respective outer peripheral edge faces to cause them to swing toward each other, and means carried by each said jaw-member and projecting into the path of travel of said encircling member and engageable by the latter to limit its movement in one endwise direction and to cause the relative spreading movement of said j aw-members. 7. A pulling device comprising a body and a plurality of jaw-members pivotally mounted in said body and adapted to have swinging movement about their respective pivotal connections with said body to cause relative spreading and contracting movement between the free swinging ends of said j aw-members, in combination, with a member encircling said j aw-members and movable endwise thereof in contact with their respective outer peripheral edge faces to cause them to swing toward each other, means projecting into the path of travel of said encircling member and engageable by the latter to limit its movement in one endwise direction and to cause the relative spreading movement of said jaw-members, and means limiting the endwise movement of said encircling means in the reverse direction. 8. A pulling device comprising a body and a plurality of jaw-members pivotally mount-v ed in said body and adapted to have swing-,
ing movement about their respective pivotal connections with said body'to cause relative spreading and contracting movement between the free swinging ends of said jawmembers, in combination with a member encircling said jaw-members and movable endwise thereof in contact with their respective outer peripheral edge faces to cause them to swing toward each other, means projecting into the path of travel of said encircling member and engageable by the latter to limit its movement in one endwise direction and to cause the relative spreading movement of said jaws, and means carried by each of said jaw-members for limiting the endwise movement of said encircling member in the reverse direction.
9. A puller comprising a body, a thrust screw working in said body and a plurality of jaw-members pivotally mounted in said body to have swinging movement in radial planes toward and from the axis aof said thrust-screw, in combination withla'member encircling said jaw-members. and movable endwise thereof in contact with their'respece tive radially outer edge faces to cause them to swing radially inward toward each other,
each said jaw member having a plurality of inthesame radial planes as the respective radial "slots and curved in a radial'direction and diverging from each other in a" radially inward direction, and aplurality of sheet metal jaw-members respectively having faces in sliding engagement with the respective opposing faces of said body, said jaw-members respectively extendingthrough, andbeing substantially in sliding contact with the Walls of, the respective radial slots in said radially extending portion, in-combination with a sheet metal ring fitting about and slidable endwise of said jaw-members and having its radially inner portion formed with radially extending slots respectively registering with the slots in said body radially ex" tending portion and slidably receiving the radially outer portions of said jaw-members and having their end walls-equidistant from the axis of said ring, substantially all of said slot end walls being adapted to simultaneously engage and slide lengthwise of the radially Enter edge faces of the respective aw-memers.
11. A pulling device comprising a body and a plurality of jaw members pivotally mounted in said body, in combination with a mem ber encircling said j aw-members and movable endwise thereof in contact'with their respective radially outer edge faces to cause them to swing radially toward each other and to at will prevent or permit their'relative radial swinging movement away from each other, and means carried by each of said jaw-members-and projecting radially beyond the radially outer edge thereof into the path of travel of said encircling member to be engaged by the latter to cause the swinging movement of said aw-members radially away from-each other, and means limiting such spreading movement of several of said jaw-members dis posed on opposite sides of the axis of the body. r v a 12. A pulling device comprising a body, a thrust-screw working through said body, and aplurality of jawemembers pivotally mounted by one end portion in said body for swinging movement in their respective radial planes toward and from each other, in combination with a continuous member encircling said jaw-members and engaging the respective radially outer faces thereof and movable lengthwise thereof to cause their radially inward swinging movement or to permit their movement in the reverse direction, said jaw-members being formed with radial stop lugs projecting from their free swinging ends radially into the path of travel of said encircling member to prevent its movement ofi? of said jaw-members in that direction and being formed with ears projecting radially outward from their pivoted ends to be engaged by said encircling member to cause the radial spreading movement of the free ends of said jaw-members each said jawmember and said body being formed to cooperate in limiting such spreading swinging pivotal movement to such degree as to prevent the removal of the encircling member from said j aw-members by continued endwise movement in that direction.
