Abstract

Wood fibres or materials consisting of wool fibres, e.g. yarns and fabrics are rendered resistant to felting and shrinking by subjecting them to the action of a saturated or almost saturated solution of potassium hydroxide in a monohydric alcohol diluted with an organic non-solvent or poor solvent for caustic potash which is miscible with the alcohol solution. The wool may contain 12-18 per cent water, but the reagents should not contain more than 2-0 per cent. The treatment is carried out at 15-20 DEG C. By a saturated solution it is meant that when the temperature of the solution is raised to 30 DEG C. a fine dispersion of solid caustic potash separates out. In an example a 1 per cent (weight/volume) solution of potassium hydroxide in a mixture of 1 volume of n-butyl alcohol and 9 volumes of white spirit is used to treat wool for 1 hour. After treatment the excess alkali is removed with dilute sulphuric acid, excess acid being destroyed by sodium bicarbonate and the white spirit removed with soap. In another example a 1-3 per cent solution of caustic potash in a similar 1 : 9 butanol: white spirit mixture is used to treat a knitted fabric, a similar fabric being treated with a 0.6 per cent solution of caustic soda in the same solvent mixture.
