Abstract

599,677. Velocity-modulation tubes. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. Jan. 4, 1944, No. 153. Convention date. Jan. 6. 1943. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii)] A cavity resonator for use in electron discliarge apparatus has end wall portions with apertures through which an electron stream passes, joined by a generally cylindrical boundary wall having a flexible portion so that the end walls can be moved relatively to each other in a direction parallel to the electron beam for tuning purposes. As shown, the resonator 52 has an annular rib 54 to provide the desired flexibility. The bottom end wall of the resonator is mounted in a support 57 to which the cathode assembly 67 is secured. A reflector 601 for the beam is mounted on a tube 60 passing through the seal 61 in rigid relation to the upper wall 49 of the resonator, this unit being connected to support 57 by a flexible part 72 and moved by tuning screw 66. The annular rib 54 acts as a wave trap and may be open at the ends. In an alternative construction, the side wall of the resonator may have an inwardly projecting rib in concertina fashion. Instead of screw 66, tuning may be effected by the thermal expansion of a strut with controlled heating means. A coaxial line' 68 is shown to remove energy from the oscillator, but a wave-guide with a slot-like orifice in the resonator may be used. Specification 599,733 is referred to.
