Abstract

1,004,979. Klystrons. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Dec. 19, 1961 [Jan. 26, 1961], No. 27801/64. Divided out of 1,004,976. Heading H1D. High frequency discharge apparatus, e.g. a klystron, comprises an electron gun 13, at least one cavity resonator 15 having an interaction gap 38 of predetermined spacing, and a collector assembly 16, wherein the collector assembly includes temperature responsive elements for controlling the gap spacing whereby the resonant frequency of the cavity is temperature compensated. As shown, the collector electrode is a tube 41 which is cooled by cooling liquid flowing over fins 44 attached to the outer surface of the tube 41. One end of the collector is attached to a flexible wall 33 of the resonator 15, the other end being attached to a body portion 12<SP>1</SP>. With increase in temperature, there is a tendency for the gap spacing 38 to increase owing to the expansion of the apertured partitions 32 and 33; this can be counteracted by making the collector tube 41 and body portion 12<SP>1</SP> of materials having different coefficient of expansion, e.g. of steel and copper respectively. Specification 1,004,977 is referred to.
