Abstract
1,004,977. High frequency discharge apparatus. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Dec. 19, 1961 [Jan. 26, 1961], No. 16518/64. Divided out of 1,004,976. Heading H1D. High frequency electron discharge apparatus, e.g. a klystron, comprises a cavity resonator 15 having apertured end walls 32, 35, means 13 for directing a beam of electrons through the apertures 39 in the end walls and an interaction gap 38 to a collector assembly, 16, the collector assembly comprising a cylindrical member 41 coaxial with the beam, mounted upon one of the end walls and carrying an outwardly projecting flexible fin 44<SP>1</SP>, spaced axially from the one end wall and having its outer periphery fixed in relation to the other side walls of the resonator, and means 45, 46 for applying an axial force to flex the one end wall and the flexible fin and thereby vary the resonance frequency of the resonator. The force applying means comprises a screw-threaded portion 45 on the end of the cylinder and a nut 46 engaging the thread and the body of the device. The resonator may have further tuning means in the form of a deformable side wall as described and claimed in parent Specification 1,004,976. Further fins 44 may be provided on the cylindrical member, and a cooling fluid may be passed over them. The electrons of the beam are collected by a baffle 42 mounted in a cylindrical bore formed in the cylindrical member. Specifications 1,004,978 and 1,004,979 also are referred to.
