Abstract

954,335. Cooling discharge apparatus. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. June 28, 1962 [July 3, 1961], No. 24891/62. Heading H1D. Cooling apparatus for an electron discharge device, e.g. a travelling wave tube, klystron or a magnetron, comprises a metallic member 27 constituting an outside portion of an evacuated envelope of the device, a plurality of fins 28 radiating from the metallic member, first means 29 forming a low thermal resistance path from the metallic member to an outer portion of some of the fins, and second means 31 spaced from the metallic member forming a low thermal resistance path from the outer portion of the said some of the fins to the outer portions of the other fins thereby increasing the uniformity of temperature of the fins. In the embodiment shown, a travelling wave tube having a collector 24 has an evacuation pinched off tube 25 moulded into an insulator plug 26. The members 29 may be positioned at the hottest end of the collector, and the connection means 31 may take the form of narrow ring segments or the form of rods extending axially through the length of the collector and extending through and secured to each of the fins. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the fins may radially extending and longitudinally directed, with circular rings of e.g. copper connecting all the fins and in good thermal contact with the collector.
