Abstract
1,067,355. Klystrons. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Nov. 26, 1964, No. 48147/64. Heading H1D. A multicavity klystron comprises an envelope including an electron gun section 7, a radio-frequency interaction section and a collector section 102 axially aligned and hermetically united, the radio frequency interaction section comprising a plurality of initially separate composite metallic blocks 22, 23, 24, each being hollow to provide at least one resonant cavity and being hermetically united one to the other to serially align the cavities, and drift tubes 6, 32, 36, 41, 46 extending into each block, thus forming interaction gaps 33, 37, 47, 48, wherein the metallic blocks define a plurality of intercommunicating passageways for the passage of a coolant fluid to the radiofrequency interaction section via conduits 76, 88. The coolant cools the cavities, drift tubes, polepieces 8, 26, the cavity tuning mechanisms and the collector electrode. The fluid velocity and hydraulic diameter of the passageways is such that turbulent flow is maintained. The cavities are tuned by screw adjustment of a flexible wall.
