Abstract

815,527. Discharge apparatus. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Sept. 18, 1956 [Oct. 21, 1955], No. 28545/56. Class 39(1). An electron tube apparatus comprises a metallic envelope 1, Fig. 1, forming the side walls of a cavity resonator 12, a drift tube 8 of a material having a lower coefficient of heat expansion than the envelope and being rigidly coupled thereto at or near one end 4, a centrally apertured transverse flexible conducting wall member 5 connecting the envelope 1 to the drift tube 8 and forming one end wall of the resonator 12, and a second centrally apertured transverse wall member 6 forming the other end wall of the resonator, the arrangement being such that the gap spacing between the grids 9, 11 increases with increase in size of the resonator 12 thereby maintaining a substantially constant resonance frequency. The envelope 1 may be of steel and the drift tube 8 of molybdenum both being coated with a metal of high electrical conductivity. The resonator 12 may be coupled to an external canty resonator 13 having a lossy member as in Specification 815,529 protruding inwardly thereof, the length of the member(s) being such as to resonate at substantialy the frequency of the unwanted mode. An iris opening 18 in the cavity resonator 12 is covered by a wave-energy permeable window forming a vacuum tight seal and a window leading member 21 is provided which controls the amount of coupling between the internal and external resonators 12, 13. The external resonator 13 has an output iris 23 of the kind described and claimed in Specification 815,528. Specification 815,526 also is referred to.
