Abstract

627,022. Velocity-modulated tubes. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. July 15, 1946, No. 21196. Convention date, Sept. 10, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] The position of a movable member within a vacuum-tight envelope is controlled by flexing an envelope part 2, Fig. 1, of reduced thickness, the part 2 being integral and continuous with the main body portion 1 of the envelope. Preferably, two rod portions 3, 4 are soldered to the part 2, one on each side, the portion 4 carries the movable member, and the compound rod 3, 4 pivots about the point O, being actuated for example by a micrometer screw. For large angular displacements of the rod, the movable member must be guided. In one arrangement, Fig. 2, one or both resonators 8, 9 of a velocity modulation tube are tuned by moving grid(s) 7 by means of rod construction(s) 3, 4, such movement being permitted by flexible resonator walls. Wall portion 1 is of metal and is sealed to two glass members 5, 6. The invention may also be applied to adjustment of (a) the position of the coupling loop between two resonators of a velocity modulation tube; (b) the position of the reflector electrode of a reflex velocity modulation tube; (c) the length of a drift tube of a velocity modulation tube; (d) an electron mirror in general. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes a modification, Fig. 2 (Cancelled), in which a corrugated flexible membrane 2 is soldered to the envelope portion 1, the rod member 3 passing through the membrane 2, and a further modification, Fig. 3 (Cancelled), in which a flexible metal membrane 2 is soldered to a glass tube 1, the rod member 3, 4 being in two parts. Forms are illustrated and described in which (a) the position of the coupling loop between two resonators of a velocity modulation tube is adjusted using the arrangement of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 (Cancelled, not shown); (b) the reflector electrode of a reflex velocity modulation tube is adjusted using the arrangement of Fig. 3, Fig. 6 (Cancelled, not shown); (b) two resonators of a velocity modulation tube are each tuned using the arrangement of Fig. 1, Fig. 7 (Cancelled, not shown). This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
