Abstract

554,574. Velocity-modulated discharge tubes. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. Feb. 13, 1942, No. 1964. Convention date, April 24, 1941. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii)] In a velocity modulated electron discharge tube using hollow resonators as described in Specification 523,712, tuning of the resonators singly or together is effected through tapered pins 19, Fig. 4, moved by micrometer screws 16 to adjust screws 22 ; these are held in flanges 13, 14, Fig. 6, on the resonator chambers, 10, 10<SP>1</SP>, whose flexible walls 3, 4, are secured at the centre to the drift tube 5. The screws 16 are carried by a block 11 on the tube 5, the resonator chambers being drawn to the block by three tension springs 12. There are three sets of pairs of screws 22 all originally adjusted by screw driver ; one set has no fine adjustment; of the second set only one screw 22 is moved through a tapered pin but of the third set both are moved for tuning. The thrust from the tapered pin to the screws 22 may be througn balls 21 or through a spring 23, Fig. 10. The grids-through which the electron stream passes -may be formed as shown in Fig. 8 or in Fig. 9. The cathode 41, Fig. 7, is supported 'by six rods 40 connected alternatively in pairs to form a firm support. The concentric lines forming the connections to the resonator chambers each consist of a wire 33 doubled back to form a loop 34, the end 35 being held between a tube 32 and sheath 29, insulation 37, 38 being provided for the wire. A socet 31 couples the concentric lead to the sheath and wire.
