Abstract
A non-corrosive cap on the head of a poppet valve comprises 80 per cent nickel and 20 per cent chromium, while the main body of the valve is of an alloy comprising 0.4 per cent to 0.5 per cent carbon, 0.3 per cent to 0.8 per cent silicon, up to 0.7 per cent manganese, 13 per cent to 15 per cent each of chromium and nickel, 0.2 per cent to 0.5 per cent molybdenum, 1.75 per cent to 3.0 per cent tungsten, up to 0.03 per cent each of phosphorus and sulphur and the balance of iron. An intermediate lower melting point metal used in the process of bonding the cap to the body of the valve may comprise 0.5 per cent to 1.0 per cent carbon, 0.25 per cent to 0.75 per cent silicon, 8.0 per cent to 10.0 per cent chromium, 30.0 per cent to 35.0 per cent nickel, 0.5 per cent to 1.0 per cent manganese, 1.25 per cent to 1.75 per cent boron and the balance iron.
