Abstract

596,822. Cavity walls. COOPE, J. T. L. July 23, 1945, No. 18817. [Classes 20(iv) and 87(i)] Cavity walls are formed of preformed units 1, comprising outer and inner parts 2, 3 joined by integral spacers 4, 5 whereby the units are hollow from top to bottom with projections or recesses on upper and lower end faces, by laying said units in bonded courses (like brickwork) wherein they interlock through said projections and recesses and tortuous cavities are formed through the structure by the staggered hollow units, characterised in that some units are of T-shaped formation in plan and cavity division walls are taken off another wall by means of the T-shaped units, which have a straight outer slab 2b and two inner L-shaped slabs 3b spaced therefrom and from each other. Intermediate spacers 13 are used for strength and where desired such units fit on to tubular (or other) metal columns 14. Recesses may be provided in some of the T-shaped units to provide a fireplace and/or flue (not shown) so that heat can be conducted through a unit into its cavity and hence through the whole of the walls or desired parts thereof. Pockets 11 for cementitious material may be provided in one or more of the slabs of the aforesaid units which slabs may also be shaped to form transversely inclined joints in horizontal courses (see Fig. 4).
