Abstract

Building-blocks, special shapes of.-In a hollow wall of the kind having each face formed of channel-shaped blocks A, B, Fig. 3, gaps b<2> are left between the flanges and the inner face of the opposite wall so that the air space is continuous. Bars may be inserted in the joints of the blocks. Cross walls are bonded as shown in Fig. 6, or with metal ties d, Fig. 8. Door and window openings are lined with blocks i, Figs. 11 and 12, having projections i<1> to engage the gaps f. To support floor joists, the inner blocks at the floor levels are made with two recesses, Fig. 16, into which is placed packing p such as bricks, wooden blocks, &c., and a recess r fits over the abutting flanges b of the opposite blocks. The outer blocks are made of a denser material than the inner blocks, and the flanges may be denser than the slab portions.
