Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 26, 1910.
Application filed March 31, 1910. Serial No. 552,639.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. NICHOLSON, of the city of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVall-Furring; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention contemplates new and useful improvements in Wall furring, having special reference to theconstruction of the metal covered studs or kalamein strips vertically arranged against the face of the building wall and to which the fire-proof blocks or plaster slabs are secured. I
In the accompanying drawing Figure l is a sectional view illustrating a wall fur ring constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail.
Referring to the drawing 1 designates the building wall of brick, concrete or other material and 2 the studs or kalamein strips. These studs are of peculiar construction. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the central stud 2 is adapted for use at the meeting edges of adjacent slabs or fire-proof blocks 8, while the studs 4: and 5 are located at points within the widths of theslabs. In both instances the studs are covered with a metallic sheathing 6 which extends over the outer face and sides of the stud and has its ends seated in grooves 7 on the inner face thereof. At the point of entrance into these grooves, the sheathing is bent outward as at 8 to form an angular flange which contacts with the building wall 1, maintaining the adjacent face of the wooden studding out of contact with the building wall. The studs 4: and 5 have their outer faces concaved as at 9 so that only their corners 10 contact with the plaster board 3. The central stud 2 has its outer face convex as at 12 so as to provide at the central portion thereof, an engaging surface for the meeting edges of adjacent slabs 3.
The purpose of the described formations is to insure the least possible contact between the studs and the building wall on the one side, and the plaster boards on the other, while allowing sufficient contacting surface to permit of securing the parts together. The described construction not only permits the maximum air space, but it also avoids the effect of dampness on meeting surfaces, especially that between the studs and the building wall. By my construction the wooden core of the studs is maintained entlilrely out of contact with the building wa In constructing a wall in accordance with my invention the studs are nailed to the building wall and the plaster slabs are attached to the outer faces of the studs.
I claim as my invention 1. In a wall furring, the combination with the building wall of studs adapted to be secured to the face of the wall and to constitute a support for wall slabs, said studs having a metallic covering or sheathing ex tending over their outer faces and sides, and terminating on the inner faces of the studs and bent to form angular portions adapted to contact with the building wall, for the purpose stated.
2. In a wall furring, a stud adapted to be located at the meeting edges of adjacent wall slabs, said stud having its outer face of convex formation and having grooves on its inner face and a metallic sheathing covering its outer face and sides, and having its edges seated in said grooves and bent to form angular portions for engagement with a building wall.
3. In a wall furring, a stud adapted for supporting a wall slab within the width thereof, said stud having its outer face0f concaved formation, and having grooves on its inner face, and a metallic sheathing covering its outer face and sides and having its edges seated in said grooves and bent to form angular portions for engagement with a building wall.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES H. NICHOLSON.
