Floors of reinforced-concrete girders side by side; roofs; walls; reinforced - concrete girders. - Reinforced-concrete beams to be laid side by side to form floors or roofs or superimposed to form walls, are made by moulding a covering 7 of concrete about a row of hollow cores 5 or 6, the covering being reinforced by bars 9 and stirrups 10; the stirrups lie in the joints between the cores, and their ends project into spaces 12 between the beams. Grooves 11 are made in the sides of the beams. The cores are formed of cheap concrete composed of cinders, broken brick, baked earth. cork, lava, and plaster or magnesite mortar, and may be rabbeted at the bottom edges to increase the thickness of the concrete covering. Beams for walls are made with the apertures in the cores running vertically, the apertures in adjacent beams communicating throughout the wall. The outside covering 16 may consist of stronger or more impermeable concrete than the inner covering. Pointing is applied to grooves 19.
