Abstract

855,596. Furnace walls. HILTON, L. B. Dec. 11, 1956 [July 18, 1956], No. 22250/56. Class 51 (1), In a furnace wall comprising a water-tube lining 1, Figs. 1, 2, a refractory filler 3, 4 and an outer layer of heat-insulating slabs 2, a separating agent 20, e.g. paper, is disposed between the filler and the outer layer such that the filler and the tube lining form a unit able to slide as a whole over the inner face of the layer. The lining is tied to the layer to allow relative movement therebetween by studs 5 projecting from the tubes and passing through the slabs, with substantial clearance, at their abutting edges. Horizontal bars 7 along the furnace wall secure the studs by wing-nuts 8 and, by engaging beading 10 formed along the upper and lower edges of the slabs, prevent relative slab movement. In a modified wall each stud 5, Fig. 5, is held by a split pin 13, whilst in yet another wall the slabs 2, Fig. 6, have interlocking projections and recesses 18, 19 and loosely embedded metal strips 14 which are welded to the tubes as the wall is built. The filler 3 may be as described in Specification 802,694.
