Abstract

467,551. Casings for girders. PROCTER, J. Dec. 28, 1936, No. 35476. [Class 20 (iv)] A method of encasing steel girders of I-or T-cross-section, without the-use of metal ties consists in the application to the flange, or at least one flange, of the girder of pairs of cooperating and overlapping clayware blocks 10, 15 which are arranged alternately in reversed relation and are locked together by keys 19 and cementitious material, the blocks of each pair being of unequal length and being so adapted that, when in position, the shorter block 15 lies within the contour of the longer block 10. Further clayware blocks 24 are arranged on this course of blocks and the space between the blocks and the girder is then filled. Each block 10 is provided with an undercut recess 12 to fit one edge of a flange of the girder and a sole portion 11 which extends horizontally to support the co-operating block 15 which is recessed as shown at 16 to engage the other edge of the girder flange. The vertical edges of the blocks 10, 15 are slotted so as to provide co-operating recesses 13 for the reception of keys 19 and mortar; and cement or mortar is provided between the blocks and the girder. The upper faces of the blocks 10, 15 are provided with recesses 14, 18 and hollow blocks 24 are placed on these blocks and secured by mortar, the space be. tween the blocks 24 and the web of the girder being filled with mortar 25. For encasing a T-section stanchion as shown in Fig. 6, the co-operating blocks 10, 15 are arranged on both flanges and the blocks 24<1> are placed between them. Some of the co-operating pairs of blocks may be slightly broader than the others so that the points between these blocks and the blocks 24<1> may be of staggered form.
