1294755 Reinforced concrete; metal joists HAMBRO STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS Ltd 30 Nov 1970 56683/70 Headings E1W E1S and E1K The top chord of an open-web steel joist for use in a composite structure has a first part shaped to define at least one channel which can be substantially filled with concrete when the joist is incorporated in such a structure and a second part consisting of a downwardly extending flange provided with openings at intervals along its length to receive spanner bars. As shown, the top chord is of Z section with a downwardly extending flange 16 having openings 18 which receive the reduced ends of the spanner bars 17. The spanner bars support plywood forms 19 or steel pans 20. Concrete is poured on to the forms or pans to embed the upper parts of the top chord and also reinforcing mesh 13. Knock-out portions 21 are provided below the openings 18 so that the spanner bars and forms may be removed when the concrete has set.
