[Class 51 (i).] In a furnace wall in which refractory blocks are individually supported on lugs projecting from spaced vertical supports, the lugs and co-operating recesses in the blocks are so formed that they are brought into engagement by a combined rearward and downward movement of the block with respect to its inner face. The vertical supports may be constituted by steam or water tubes 2, to which are welded inclined lugs 4, Fig. 5, adapted to support blocks a by engagement in recesses d having inclined upper walls. The blocks a may, as shown at 3, Fig. 3, be so shaped that they embrace and are wholly supported by a single tube 2, or blocks 5, Fig. 4, extending between and supported by a pair of adjacent tubes, may be employed. The inclined lugs 4 may be replaced by horizontal pins or by lugs 25, Fig. 12, arranged parallel to the tube and having their upper surface rounded and inclined downwardly towards the tube. In the latter construction, the wall is built up of half-blocks 26 having recesses 27 of the form shown in Fig. 15. Where portions of the tubes 2 are curved, the blocks 7, 8, Fig. 5, are similarly curved and are formed with upper and lower notches 9, 12 for engagement by pins 10, 13 on the tubes. Fig. 8 shows the invention applied to a locomotive firebox, the vertical supports in this case being constituted by wallplate flanges 16 having inclined lugs 17 engaging in similarly inclined notches d<11> in the blocks 20. The latter are also formed with lower notches e for engagement by positioning lugs 18.
