Bricks, special shapes of.-A steam-boiler furnace is provided with a flue adjacent thereto in which is arranged a steam boiler and superheater, the walls enclosing the furnace and flue being surrounded by a casing or wall forming a space through which air for combustion is circulated by a fan or fans so as to pass upwardly over the walls of the flue and downwardly over the walls of the furnace. Special bonding tiles are arranged in the furnace walls and wall ties are provided to maintain the inner and outer walls in spaced relation. Fig. 1 shows an underfed furnace 84 from which the gases pass over the wall 86 to the flue 91 containing the boiler and superheater tubes 87, 88. A casing 105 encloses the walls and air is forced through the space so provided by a fan 106 upwardly over the walls of the flue 91 and downwardly over the walls of the furnace to a second fan 107 which delivers the air to the stoker and to delivery openings 108. Grooved bonding tiles 21<a> in the walls support hooked cast iron members 21<c> which engage with stiffening members 21<b> bolted to vertical members 21<d> attached to the casing 105. Figs. 4 and 6 show means for holding the inner and outer walls 217, 217<a> of a furnace in spaced relation, consisting of bonding tiles 218, 221 having recesses 219, 222 with which tie-bars 220 The recesses may be provided in the jointing surface of a tile or partly within the jointing surface of each of two adjacent tiles. Instead of making the ends of the tie-bars as shown in Fig. 6, the ends may be bent more sharply. The ties may engage at their outer ends with openings in angle-irons secured to an outer casing. A modification is shown in Fig. 15, in which one of the walls, preferably the inner, is provided with projecting tiles 227 tied to tiles 228 in the outer wall by ties 229. Fig. 17 shows a further modification in which the inner and outer walls are provided with projecting and recessed tiles 230, 231 abutting together and connected by a tie-piece 234 engaging with the recesses, 230<a>, 233.
