(o1. 110-4 This invention relates to new and useful improvements in steam boilers of the portable type. j 'A'nrobjectof the invention is to provide a portablef'boilercomprising two units; one consisting of a suitable steam generator and a supporting structure therefor; the latter including a steel casing provided with a'suitable insulating lining, all of which parts are completely assembled to provide the boiler unitpand the second unit con- 1'0 stitutingthe'furnace which'embodiesa structural steel supporting frame, the necessary'firebrick and tile to provide the lining for the combustion chamber of the furnace,"and a steel casing enis closing the fire brick and tile. The particular object of the invention therefurnace, my'improved boiler necessitating only av small,.amount of masonry oribrick work to complete the setting.v up of the boiler, which masonry isof a temporary nature so that itmay be quicklyremoved to permit removal of the boiler unit from the furnace unit to facilitate handling of I theboiler, when transporting the same from one location to'another. j

The portable boiler disclosed in this inventio comprises two completely assembled units, one of which will hereafter be referred to as the boiler unit and the other as the furnace unit.
The boiler unit includes a structural steel frame comprising base members 1 and 2, preferably'of I-beam crosssectio'n as shown in Figures 1 and 2, and upper beams 3 supported upon the base members 2 by suitable upright members 4 and 5, preferably H-shaped in cross section, as shown in Figure 6. The upright members 4 and 5 extend above the beams-3 as best shown in Figure 3.
The form of steam generator here-shown'is of the three drum type, comprising an upper drum 6, an intermediate drum 7, and'a lowerdrum 8, all operatively connected together'by banks'of water circulating tubes 9, l1, and 12, as shown in Figure 1. The upper'druin 6 is supported upon the upper beams 3' of "the structural frame by suitable brackets 13, and the intermediate drum 7 is suspended from these beams by suitable brackets 14, shown in Figure 3. The lower drum 8 is suspended from the'tube banks 11- and 12 in the usual manner to allow for expansion and contraction. The upper drum 6, commonlyknown as the steam drum, is shown provided with the usual steam nozzle 16, while the lower drum-8 n on the Suitable bafiies are provided in connection with the tube banksto direct the products of combustion thru the generator in the manner indicated by the arrows inFigure 1. The steam generator is enclosed within a suit- -'able casing formed from a plurality, of metal plates suitably secured together and. supported'by the frame members'2 and3. The upper "wall of the'casing shown as being reinforced by a plurality of cross members '22 to prevent distortioniof the upper wall thereofgfhe casing is provided with'the usual smoke. outlet to be connected. A damper 24 is shown in the smoke outlet 23 to control the flow of gaseous fumes therethru.
The furnace unit, upon which the boiler unit is adapted to be demountably suported, also includes a structural supporting frame here shown as comprising side frame members 25 connected together by cross members 26, 2'7, and 28, shown in Figures 1 and 2. The frame members 25, 26, 27, and 28 are preferably of channel cross section and are comparatively wide so as to provide a substantial support for the furnace when the boiler is completely assembled. Because of the relatively large ground engaging areas of the base members 25 to 28, inclusive, the furnace, with the boiler unit supported thereon, may be set up on the ground surface without the use of a foundation constructed of masonry, such as is commonly used in boiler set ups.
, Suitable uprights 29, 31, and 32 are secured to the side base members 25 and have their upper portions suitably connected together by means of channel members 33 and 34 and cross channels 35, 36, and 37. i r
The side walls 38 of the furnace and also the front and rear walls 39 and 41, respectively, are here shown constructed of suitable fire tiles 42 supported upon brackets or hangers 40, secured to the upright framemembers 29, 31, andr32 as shown in Figures 1, 2, and 4. Suitable fire bricks 43 are shown interposed between the tiles 42 to complete the formation of the walls. Openings 44 are provided in the front wall 39 of'the furnace adapted to receive suitable oil or gas burners for the introduction of fuel into the furnace.
The rear wall 41 of the furnace extends above the side walls 38 and front wall 39 as shown in Figure 4, and is reinforced by means of a transverse plate 45 secured to a cross member 46, by suitable brackets 47, as shown in Figure 5. The
cross member 46 is preferably secured to the upright frame members 31. A hanger 40 is secured to the upper portion of a transverse plate 45 to. provide a support for theupper row of tiles 42 as shown in Figure 4. By constructing the boiler and furnace unit, as above. described, two units may be completely assembled at the factory and shipped as complete units to the place where the boiler is to be used, thereby greatly reducing the cost of setting up the boiler on the job, because of the elimination of the operation of constructing and assembling each individual unit on the job.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the portable boiler herein disclosed, comprises two units, each adapted to be completely assembled at the factory and shipped in such condition to the location where it is to be used. The two units are so constructed that the boiler may readily be placed upon the furnace, after which the joint between the two units over the combustion chamber is sealed by suitable masonry, indicated by the numerals 48 in Figures 1 and 2. When the boiler unit is placed upon the furnace unit, the base frame members 1 and 2 of the boiler unit will engage the upper ends of the uprights 29, 31, and 32, as shown in Figures. 1 and 2. The structural supporting frames of the two units are so constructed that the two units need not be bolted or otherwise secured together when the two units are set up as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the only means necessary. to secure together the two units consisting of the masonry or brick work 48, shown in Figures 1 and 2.
It; will thus beseen that very little masonry is needed to set up the boiler on the job. When the boiler has completed its period of use in a certain location, the two units may be quickly disassembled by simply destroying the sealing masonry or brick work indicated by the numerals 48, after which the boiler unit may be removed from the furnaceunit, and the two units placed on suitable skids or other transporting means, for transportation from one place to another. The cost of setting up and taking down the boiler has been reduced toa minimum because the construction of masonry and brick work on the job has substantially been dispensed with, and, becauseof its novel construction, the boiler may be set up and taken down in. a comparatively short time without having to destroy the walls of the furnace, as is now common practice when ,using' furnaces of ordinary construction. The furnace walls are preferably provided with suitable air circulation passages 49, 51, and 52, as shown in Figures 1, 2, and 4.
In the drawings,'I have shown a three drum type of steam generator, but it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to this particular type of generator as other types suitable for the purpose may be used without departing from the scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A portable fire box unit for water tube boilers comprising relatively wide ground engaging members forming a rigid and substantially rectangular base, uprights connected to and rising from said base, a substantially rectangular frame connected to said uprights and spaced from said base, and fire brick supported. upon the framework between said base and frame and forming the walls of said furnace, said framework and brick walls forming a unitary structure which can be moved about from place to place as a unit without disassembling.
2. A portable fire box unit for water tube boilers comprising relatively wide ground engaging members forming a rigid and substantially rectangular base, uprights connected to and rising from said base, a substantially rectangular frame connected to said uprights adjacent the upper ends thereof, the upper ends of said. uprights forming asupport for a detachable boiler unit,fire brick and tile supported upon the framework between said base and frame and forming the walls of said furnace, and one of said walls having a reinforced portion projecting above the other walls, said framework and walls forming a unitary structure which can be moved about from place to place as-a unit without disassembling.
3. A portable fire box unit for water tube boilers comprising relatively wide ground engaging members forming a rigid and substantially rectangular base, uprights connected to and rising from saidrbase, a substantially rectangular frame connected to said uprights and spaced from said base, plates secured to the outer faces of said uprights between said base and frame and form-- ing the outer walls of said fire box unit, a plurality of hangers secured to the innerfaces'of said uprights, and fire brick and tile connected to said hangers and forming inner walls spaced from said outer walls to provide air circulating passages between said walls, said framework and walls forming a unitary structure which may be
