Walls; crowns and roofs; baffles.- A furnace wall suitable for boiler furnaces is suspended from girders 26, Fig. 1, by tubular members 29 provided with flanges 23 engaging with the girders 26 and with a bottom plate 32 on which rests the side. wall 30. The wall terminates above the ground level so as to leave a free space for access to the grate 36 and for the installation of the grate, fittings. The intermediate wall 34 between adjacent grates may be suspended in a similar manner. The girders 26 also carry transverse girders 27 for supporting a flat arch 31. The walls are cooled by the circulation of air through the tubular members 29. Fig. 5 shows a front wall 45 suspended from girders 26 by rods 37 engaging with a plate 39 on which rests the brickwork. The rods 37 are surrounded by tubular members 38 allowing for the circulation of air and ventilating passages 84 are provided in the brickwork. The plate 39 is provided with grooves with which engage the flanges of girders 41 for supporting the arch 42. Fig. 8 shows a sectional suspended wall 53 associated with a wall 52 supported from below with passages provided in each wall for the circulation of air. Slip joints are provided between the wall sections. In the modification shown in Fig. 12, the lower blocks 51 of the side suspended walls are supported by T-shaped hooks 50 so that they may be readily renewed. The hooks 50 are secured to box castings 47 suspended from rods 37 and supporting the plates 39 and intermediate castings by which intermediate blocks 51 are supported. Additional walls 52 supported from below are jointed to the suspended wall by packing 85. Metallic framework 55 maintains the walls in contact, sliding connections being provided at 56. With a wall construction of this kind the overall width of the grate 61 is greater than the distance between the walls 58. Fig. 14 shows a powdered, liquid or gaseous fuel furnace with suspended walls 8, shown in detail in Fig. 15, and comprising tubular supports 66 carrying brickwork 67 on plates 68 which also support intermediate brickwork 71 by bolts 70 and plates 69.
