Abstract
309,439. Foster Wheeler, Ltd., (Assignees of Keenan, W. F., and Eddy, H. F.). April 10, 1928, [Convention date]. Walls; cooling.-In a boiler furnace comprising thin walled superheater tube elements spaced apart from each other and from the combustion chamber wall in such a manner that the tube elements can absorb radiant heat on all sides while avoiding the formation of slag bridges between the tubes and between the tubes and wall, the tubes are out-turned at their ends to connect with external headers and are anchored intermediate their ends to the combustion chamber walls. As shown in Fig. 1, the superheater tubes are arranged parallel to the wall A and their ends are bent at right-angles and pass through packed openings in the wall to connect with upper and lower headers C, D. The weight of the elements is taken by blocks F. In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and 5, water tubes G are arranged between the superheater tubes B and seated in saddle blocks H, the spaces between which are sealed by battens h. A bracket A<10> supports the upper headers G<1>, C and a bracket A<11> supports the lower headers G<2>, D through a resilient connection. Fig. 6 shows a further modification wherein the steam from the superheater elements I in contact with the furnace wall is led through nipple,c I<1> into a header JA and thence to the headers of the superheater tubes B. Fig. 9 shows one form of intermediate anchoring device comprising bolts L secured to lugs B<5> welded to the tubes and secured to channel bars M external to the furnace wall. Various other arrangements of the tubes are described and illustrated. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 231,488 and 275,056.
