Abstract

Cooling; baffles.-In a boiler of the Babcock & Wilcox type the slag particles rising with the furnace gases are separated out of the gases before they enter the main tube banks by a screen of auxiliary water tubes 27<1> which are widely spaced relatively to the main boiler tubes and which extend across the combustion chamber about midway between the furnace and the main boiler tubes. The auxiliary tubes extend through the sides of the combustion chamber and open into drums 30', 31<1>, which are connected to the main drum by rows of upflow and downcomer tubes 34', 33<1>. Two rows of tubes oppositely inclined to the horizontal may be used in place of the single row of auxiliary tubes shown. Baffles placed across the auxiliary tubes may extend only partly along the length of the tubes, or rows of tiles resting on alternate pairs of tubes may extend the whole length of the tubes. Part of the lower end of a baffle may extend below the tubes to cause slag flowing down the baffle to drip into the furnace. The tiles may be made of semi-cylindrical sections 41, Fig. 10, having internal grooves engaging flanges on metallic tie-pieces 43. The openings in the walls through which the auxiliary tubes extend are made gas-tight by pairs of sliding plates surrounding the tube ends.
