Abstract

175,765. Boden, A. P., and Healy, H. W. Nov. 24, 1920. Water-tube boilers.-Boilers having upper and lower drums connected by banks of tubes are fitted with horizontal baffles which direct the eases first across the upper parts of the tubes and beneath the top drums, and then backwards and forwards across the lower parts of the tubes. The baffles 7, 8 are so arranged that the cross-section of the passes for the furnace gases gradually decreases in area towards the outlet 26. Each baffle is built up of longitudinal and transverse cast-iron plates placed between the tubes, and of tiles 27 placed between the tube-banks. The plates and tiles may be supported by transverse beams 10, by rings shrunk on the tubes, or by semicircular pieces secured against the tubes by wedges. The small spaces around the tubes are filled in, and the surface of the baffle coated with asbestos fire-clay and cement. Soot dislodged by means of blowing-nozzles 32 is removed through a slotted sliding door 14 at the back of the baffle 8. The steam is superheated in straight tubes 20, 21 connected to headers 16 - - 19 and placed between the boiler tube-banks. The bottom headers of the superheater are connected to gether by external tubes 24.
