Abstract

314,259. Stirling Boiler Co., Ltd., (Babcock & Wilcox Co.). Aug. 4, 1928. Walls; crowns; cooling. - In a water-tube boiler of the Stirling type a row of tubes 19 extends from the front upper drum 1 downwardly and rearwardly over the combustion chamber 16 in front of the first bank of tubes 5 to form a slag screen, the tubes 19 being continued downwards against the rear wall 17 to a header 20 located below the mud drum 4 and connected to the second upper drum 2 by tubes 21 outside the furnace. An arch 18 extends above the rear end of the grate 15 and the tubes 19 are bent around along the lower side of the arch before entering the header 20. There may be more than one row of tubes 19, preferably more widely spaced in either or both directions than are the tubes 5 of the first bank. To support the tubes with freedom to expand, lugs 23, Fig. 2, welded to the tubes are connected by straps 24 to crosspieces 26 resting against bucbstays 27, the straps 24 extending through recesses 31 in adjacent tiles 25 built into the wall 17. Similar fastening means 23<1> support the horizontal portions of the tubes 19. The chain grate is provided with side boxes 14 having tube connections 14<1>, 14<11> o the boiler, the tubes 14<1> extending in side the furnace adjacent to the side walls. The invention may be applied to boilers fired by pulverulent fuel.
