Abstract

474,087. Water-tube steam boilers. BAUER, G. May 12, 1936, No. 13430. [Class 123 (ii)] Marine water-tube boilers fired with liquid or pulverulent fuel have an upper drum 1 and one or more lower drums 2 of which one is connected to the upper drum by inclined groups of upcomer and downcomer tubes 3, 5 enclosing a superheater 6 at the rear of the furnace towards which the axis of the burner 17 is directed in a plane at an angle, e.g. a right-angle, to the axes of the drums. Radiation tubes 9, spring- ing from a lower drum, screen the furnace bottom, front wall 16 and roof. The boilers are set up with the drums athwart ship and a number, e.g. six, can be arranged in two rows served by a common smoke flue. A narrowing of the lateral contour of the boiler at the superheater level provides a space between adjacent boilers into which a part of the superheater may be withdrawn. In modifications, a second lower drum is connected to drum 2 by tubes on both sides of a wall or the tubes above the wall extend amongst the upcomer group 3 to the upper drum. The burners may be arranged in the roof or an inclined front wall of the furnace.
