Abstract

594,883. Cathode-ray tubes. EHRENBERG, W. Aug. 17, 1944, No. 15676 [Class 39 (i)] A screen for a cathode-ray tube comprises a layer of material, e.g. barium fluoride, powdered glass or quartz having an irregular surface and thus normally opaque to light, this layer being coated with a wetting liquid such as octyl sebacate having substantially the same refractive index as the material, the two together forming a transparent screen. When scanned by a cathode-ray beam the liquid recedes and exposes the material to an extent dependent on the modulation of the beam, the opacity of the screen being thus varied. The screen may not be applied directly to the glass wall but deposited on a conducting transparent layer connected to the second anode.
