Abstract
513,776. Television receivers. SCOPHONY, Ltd., and ROSENTHAL, A. H. Feb. 3, 1938, No. 3434. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii)] A screen of a crystalline alkali halide or like material is scanned to produce an opacity which is brought to a datum at frame frequency. A crystal 9, Fig. 1, e.g. of potassium bromide, is scanned by a modulated cathode ray beam, the electrons injected into the crystal forming an opaque deposit which moves through the crystal . at a velocity dependent upon the potentials of the electrodes 10, 11, and the temperature of the crystal. These factors are adjusted so that the opaque deposit completes its traverse in a frame period. Electrodes 10, 11 may be dispensed with, the surface charge being utilized to produce the desired field. The electrode 10 may be replaced by a secondary emitting layer, either to increase the opaque deposit or to produce a surface charge. The crystal is maintained at a constant temperature by thermostatically controlled heating coils within, or without, the crystal, Figs. 4, 5, not shown. The crystal may be mounted outside the cathode ray tube on an electrode forming the end wall, Fig. 2, not shown. The opaque deposit may be brought to a datum level by a second cathode ray beam immediately preceding the modulated cathode ray beam, Fig. 6, not shown. In a modification, the crystal is scanned by light of one wavelength, and imaged on the screen by light of another wavelength, Fig. 3, not shown. The scanning may reduce or increase the opacity of the crystal.
