Abstract
588,119. Electron microscopes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 30, 1945, No. 2366. Convention date, Feb. 1, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] The fluorescent screen of an electron microscope is vibrated ina direction transverse to the impinging electron beam, longitudinal movement of the screen being prevented by guide members 39, Fig. 2. The screen comprises a frame 30 of circular or rectangular shape supporting a transparent window 31 on which the fluorescent material is deposited, and is actuated by a rod 35 passing through a bellows 37. The external end of the rod 35 may be constituted by an armature, Fig. 1 (not shown), which is vibrated by means of a coil traversed by alternating current at a frequency of at least twenty cycles per second so as to eliminate " flicker." If the image is to be photographed, however, the screen may be vibrated manually at a lower frequency during the exposure. The screen may consist of a single layer of fluorescent particles.
