Abstract

<PICT:0594667/III/1> In the regeneration of catalyst particles by burning off carbonaceous deposits while the particles are suspended or fluidised in an oxidising gas, water is injected in to the spent regenerating gas to cool it and prevent overburning of catalyst suspended therein. Fig. 1 shows an apparatus in which the catalyst circulates through reactor 22 and regenerator 58, being in a dense fluidised phase in both vessels. Water is continuously injected through sprays 122 into the dilute suspension above the dense phase in the regenerator. For emergency cooling more water may be injected into the dilute phase by sprays 128 and also into the outlet pipe by pipe 132. In another modification (not shown) wherein the catalyst is in a light suspension and passes out of the regenerator with the spent gases, water is injected into the cyclones wherein it is separated.
