Abstract

The temperature of chemical reactions, particularly the cracking or other conversion of hydrocarbons is controlled by indirect heat exchange with aluidised finely divided solid. Metals, clay, silica, alumina, and other refractory oxides are suitable materials. The reaction chamber may comprise tubes 4 connected by headers and surrounded by a vessel 1 containing <PICT:0587774/III/1> the fluidised solid. The latter may be withdrawn by gravity to a cooler 25, re-aerated and passed up pipe 26 to separator 27 from which it is returned to the jacket 1. The fluidising gas is returned to the pump 21 through a cyclone separator 18.
