Abstract
<PICT:0792827/III/1> In a process for catalytically treating fluid hydrocarbons, a heated reaction vessel contains a catalytic basket spaced from the walls so as to give a reaction space between the heating wall and the catalyst basket, which is continuously heated by radiation from the vessel. A refractory wall furnace 10 is employed to heat a thin walled metallic reaction tube 11, which passes completely through the furnace and is provided with inlets 12 and 13 and outlet 14. Concentrically disposed within the tube is a catalyst container 17 disposed in spaced relationship with the inner wall of the reaction tube to provide a narrow passageway 18 for reaction. A thin layer of particulate catalyst 19 is confined between the outer foraminous screen 20 and the fluid-impervious tubular member 21. Alternatively, as in Figures not shown, the reactor may be heated by an internal heating tube or the catalytic baskets may be placed on top of one another or may be coaxially disposed. Fluidized solids and heating gases may be also introduced into the reaction space. Reactions specified are the catalytic production of hydrogen from hydrocarbons the catalytic hydroforming of naphthenic hydrocarbons, polymerization of olefines and the hydrogenation of naphthenes and olefines, dehydrogenation of butylene and the oxiation of hydrocarbons. Catalysts specified are chromium or molybdenum oxides supported on zinc aluminate, chromium oxide on silica or alumina Fe203 supported on magnesium oxide together with promoters or accelerators such as copper or potassium oxide and catalysts described in Specification 640,368 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,571,953 and 2,575,324.
