Abstract

In a process for burning carbonaceous material from a finely divided solid contact material by means of an oxygen-containing gas wherein the contact material is predominantly in a dense fluidized state, the contact material near the upper surface of the dense phase is maintained at a temperature below that of the main portion of this phase by continuously discharging a cooled portion of the contact material at about the height of the interface between the dense and vapour phases. Damage to the contact material by overheating is reduced, and "after-burning" in the vapour phase avoided. The temperature in the dense phase may be maintained above 1050 DEG F. and that in the vapour phase below 1050 DEG F. The material to be treated is introduced through line 2, mixes with the oxygen-containing gas in line 5, enters the regenerator 6 through manifold 8, and is removed through line 10. A portion of the contact material is withdrawn via line 14, passed through cooler 17 and returned to the interface 7 via line 18, at the top of which a baffle 19 may be <PICT:0590244/III/1> provided. Flue gas containing a lower concentration of free oxygen than that of the regenerating gas may be introduced into line 16 to circulate the contact material. The process may be used for the reactivation, revivification, or regeneration of catalysts, adsorbents, and treating earths, and especially for the treatment of contaminated natural or synthetic clay-type catalysts used in hydrocarbon conversions.
